Abstract:Sea ice is, in some respects, a simple component of the weather and climate system. In this note, I outline a starting point for sea ice modeling that keeps that simplicity in the sea ice model proper. As future usages will demand less simple sea ice representations, the framework for the model is not at all simple. For additional future uses, it is important to develop Earth System Modeling Framework software connections in this model. Further, the version 0 model establishes a baseline for sea ice model skill. No new model can be accepted if it is not demonstrably better than version 0 by skill measures.
