Marine Modeling and Analysis Branch > Regional Ocean > ROFS Output

ROFS was retired in October, 2007. No output is being generated or distributed from it any longer. This page is left for historical reference only. See the RTOFS web page for the currently operational ocean forecast system.

ROFS Output

The majority of ROFS output fields are packed in the World Meteorological Organization standard GRIB (GRIdded Binary) format. Brief descriptions of the different types of GRIB files are given below. For the information on degribbing contact ROFS GRIB Site.

.igb file: This GRIB file contains nowcasts or the 24-h forecasts valid at 0000 UTC (8 P.M. EDT or 7 P.M. EST) on the native ROFS grid (instantaneous only).

.igb.std file: This GRIB file contains 24-h forecasts valid at 0000 UTC on a standard lat/lon grid. The grid characteristics are the following: dimensions are 332 x 210 with a horizontal resolution of 0.1 degrees with the lower left corner at 83.05 degrees W longitude and 26.35 degrees N latitude. Variables which have been interpolated to the standard grid are water level and temperature, salinity and currents at 31 Z-levels.

.agb file: This GRIB file contains 24-h average and surface fields of daily extremes on the native ROFS grid for both the nowcasts or forecasts.

.agb.std file: This GRIB file average and surface fields of daily extremes on a standard lat/lon grid for both the nowcasts or forecasts. The grid characteristics are the following: dimensions are 332 x 210 with a horizontal resolution of 0.1 degrees with the lower left corner at 83.05 degrees W longitude and 26.35 degrees N latitude. Variables which have been interpolated to the standard grid are water level and temperature, salinity and currents at 31 Z-levels.

.sgb file: This GRIB file contains 1-h nowcasts or forecasts of water levels and 1m currents on the native ROFS grid for the 24-h length of the nowcast/data assimilation or forecast cycle.

ROFS has been retired. No output is being generated or distributed from it any longer. This page is left for historical reference only. The digital files were available by anonymous ftp or can be downloaded from the table below.

Nowcast igb igb.std agb agb.std sgb
24-h Forecast igb igb.std agb agb.std sgb
48-h Forecast igb igb.std agb agb.std sgb

The archive of digital fields in monthly directories (YYYYMM) is available through NOAA's National Oceanographic Data Center ) in Silver Spring, MD. To access these fields, go to their anonymous ftp site (ftp NODC ).

NOTE:For the old archived fields,.stdigb stands for.igb.std and .stdagb stands for.sgb.std.
